Gary R. Redding has announced his candidacy to represent District 2 on the Halifax County Board of Commissioners.

Redding grew up on his grandparents’ farm, the late Matthew and Florenza Moore Grant, in Tillery.

He is a farm owner and third generation resettler in the Tillery New Deal Resettlement Farm Community.

Redding is a graduate of Halifax County Schools.

He went on to earn a bachelor of arts and master of arts in English from East Carolina University and a Juris Doctor degree from UDC David A. Clarke School of Law.

In a statement Redding said after graduating from law school, he returned to Halifax County “to invest his talents and join others who are working to improve the area’s economic, educational, and social opportunities.”

Currently, he is the department head of criminal justice, an English instructor, and co-advisor for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Halifax Community College.

His positions have allowed him to teach and advise HCC dual-enrolled early college and Career and College Promise students.

He has received HCC’s Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Academic Advising awards.

In the statement he said he would like to join the Halifax County Board of Commissioners to help improve county-wide economic, educational, health and wellness, public safety, and other important initiatives.

He said he also hopes the board can address several issues that are causing young people and others to leave the area, “including a lack of good-paying jobs, access to high-speed internet, housing options, and recreation.”
