A Maryland man who nearly collided with a Roanoke Rapids Police Department patrol car Tuesday was charged with DWI and has a December 22 district court date.

The near-collision occurred on Highway 158 near Old Farm around 7 p.m. when Officer C. Walker observed a vehicle approaching his rear at what Chief Shane Guyant said was a hurried pace.

Walker initiated a traffic stop and received assistance from PACE Officer J. Conrad.

The driver of the truck was identified as Sylvester Lee Cole, 53, of Owensville, Maryland.

Guyant said Walker observed that Walker was impaired. Administered a breath test, Cole registered a .33 — nearly four times the legal limit.

Cole was released to a responsible person on a written promise to appear in court.
