A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper continues to investigate a single-vehicle fatality last week and is awaiting reports to supplement the information he has already obtained.

Trooper J.T. Keeter said the preliminary cause of the death of 30-year-old Dennis D. Gonzalez-Diaz is listed as careless and reckless driving.

Gonzalez-Diaz of San Antonio was driving in the southbound lane of Interstate 95 near the 157.5 mile marker near Enfield when he ran off the road to the right. The vehicle cleared a creek bank and struck a tree on the opposite side. The vehicle then went into the water but did not submerge in the crash last Tuesday around 3 a.m.

The man died at the scene.
