Ten area female students will spend their summer serving as clean energy ambassadors.

The Center for Energy Education welcomed four rising tenth graders and six rising eleventh graders to serve as the 2023-2024 cohort of its Empowering Young Women in Solar internship program.

The five-week opportunity, which includes a $1,500 scholarship, will provide a range of opportunities for the students to learn about renewable energy.

Also known as the Radiant Rays, these students will champion climate change and social justice, the center said, and “will also join the energy conversation, lending their voices and inspiring change, to help make the process more equitable – from generation to consumption.”

The initiative, in its second year, is a partnership between energy industry partners, academic institutions and nonprofit organizations who share C4EE’s goal of improving and diversifying the future of clean energy.

The learning experience allows these young women of color to explore renewable energy career paths, network with renewable energy industry leaders, meet professional mentors and serve their communities through clean energy advocacy events. They will also assist middle schoolers in the center’s renewable energy camp and organize a Climate Awareness Festival.

“Expanding career awareness and opportunities in rural areas is a fundamental tenet of our mission,” said Workforce Development and Education Manager Whitney Sessoms. “This program’s design not only equips these female students with the tools to become professionals but it also recognizes the value these youth represent in generating momentum in our clean energy future.”
