Community college students in Halifax and Northampton counties will be eligible to apply for scholarships which the Golden LEAF board approved to support students from rural and suburban areas.

The board awarded the North Carolina Community College System $2,060,000 for students to attend participating community colleges in the state.

Curriculum students can receive up to $2,250 per year and continuing education students can receive up to $1,850 per year.

The Golden LEAF Foundation has awarded funds for scholarships to students attending North Carolina community colleges since 2000.

“The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program is an important component of the foundation’s workforce preparedness strategy,” said Golden LEAF President and Chief Executive Officer Scott T. Hamilton. “Our goal is for Golden LEAF scholars to gain the talent, knowledge, and skills necessary to help North Carolina’s employers that are outside our urban areas by growing the workforce and therefore helping these communities to move the economic needle.”

Awards can be applied toward tuition, fees, books, supplies at the community college where enrolled, transportation, childcare expenses related to attending classes, and credential testing upon course completion.

Students interested should contact their college’s financial aid office for more information on how to apply and deadlines.

Each participating college will set the deadline for the scholarship application.
