Halifax County Schools has named Sonya Parker the director of media and technology services.

“After a decade of being employed as a teacher, Parker discovered a passion for library science,” the school system said. “Her transition from the classroom to the media center allowed her to grow as a school leader – from chairing the school improvement team to being an assistant principal designee to coordinating a summer school program.”

At the same time, Parker delved into technology in the media center by managing the school’s website, troubleshooting device issues, and working with STEM products.

“These experiences led her to seek a technology-focused career and become an instructional technology facilitator,” said the school system. “She is grateful for the opportunity to continue working in technology in her new role as director of media and technology services for Halifax County Schools.”

For the past 18 years, Parker has been evolving as an educator. She enjoys mentoring and coaching educators and sharing strategies and tools that positively impact student achievement. She has presented technology’s technical and instructional aspects at school, district, and regional levels.

Parker has a bachelor of arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master of library science degree from East Carolina University.

She is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a concentration in school administration.

Parker is the mother of three children: Emmai, Elissa, and Elaina.

In her spare time, she enjoys bowling, walking, reading, journaling, volunteering, and spending time with family and friends.

“We are excited to have Ms. Parker as our media and technology services director,” said Superintendent Eric Cunningham. “She brings a vast set of skills that will benefit Halifax County Schools. I look forward to seeing our technology services’ continued growth and advancement.”
