A seat belt violation Saturday resulted in the arrest of a Roanoke Rapids man for possession of 5.8 grams of psychedelic mushrooms, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Lieutenant Shane Guyant said Deputy G. Martin was working traffic enforcement at Virginia Avenue and East Tenth Street when he noticed the driver of a passing vehicle – Keehad Cornelius Hawkins – not wearing a seat belt.

Martin stopped the 31-year-old Hawkins in the 1600 block of East Tenth Street and Becker Drive.

Guyant said Martin noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and learned Hawkins did not have a license.

A probable cause search resulted in the seizure of the psilocybin mushrooms – a controlled schedule I substance.

Hawkins was charged with possession of a schedule I controlled substance and received an $1,800 bond and February 13 court date.
