Halifax County Board of Commissioners Chairman Vernon Bryant thanked a host of people who stood together last week in opposition to a section of Senate Bill 214, which would have allowed Franklin County to condemn property in Halifax, Vance, and Warren.
“We extend our sincere thanks to the citizens, organizations, media, and elected officials across Halifax, Vance, and Warren counties for standing together with one voice,” Bryant said at this morning’s board meeting. “We especially appreciate the leadership of Representative Rodney Pierce and Senator Norman Sanderson, for helping this effort.”
Because of this effort, Bryant said Part V, Section V of the bill was removed from the state Senate and House agendas. “This is a clear example of what we can accomplish when we work together to protect our communities and we appreciate it.”
Tyler Richardson, a member of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal Council, told the board during public comments that the council was glad to provide, support, and adopt a resolution in opposition to the bill. “This reflects the importance we place on communication and standing together when matters affect our communities. These moments, both cultural and civic, show the value of strong partnerships.”
House Speaker Destin Hall said last week that he was killing the proposal after members of his own Republican caucus began voicing concerns, despite Hall having backed its introduction. He said the issues might come up again.
