Local restaurant The Hen & The Hog will be hosting a visit from America’s Best Restaurants next month.

America’s Best Restaurants, a national media and marketing company focusing on local, independently-owned restaurants, will bring its ABR Roadshow to the restaurant on February 13.

Popular dishes will be highlighted, along with an extensive on-camera interview with owner Glenn Patterson Wilson about the restaurant’s special place in the community.

The episode will be aired extensively on social media channels at a later date.

A former designer of upscale hotels, Wilson traveled the world before taking early retirement and coming home to Halifax to try to revitalize the town’s small one-block downtown area which had fallen into disrepair.

One building in particular was transformed into The Hen & The Hog.

“I knew how to save the building and design a good environment,” she says, referring to her knack for interior design. “We have a happening little downtown now.”

The Hen & The Hog has been open for eight years.

Wilson’s future plans include revitalizing a two-story building across the street from the restaurant to house an arts center for the community.

She notes she is looking forward to working with the Roadshow.

“The restaurant business is just so hard to begin with, and to keep things fresh and keep people wanting to come back, and just handling all of those challenges that are thrown at you daily … it’s wonderful to have a company like America’s Best Restaurants help restaurants,” she says.

Describing the menu as “true southern, but with a locally inspired vibe,” Wilson and her GM Kayla Mason note that the menu changes seasonally, four times a year.

Customer favorites include pimento cheese fritters, sweet potato pound cake, and the barbecue sandwich with sweet potato coleslaw.

America’s Best Restaurants will be filming on location on February 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Hen & The Hog’s finished episode premiere date will be announced on their Facebook page and will be featured on America’s Best Restaurants’ website at this link
