Governor Roy Cooper Thursday authorized a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the April 6, 2021 shooting deaths of a man and woman in Weldon.

Levita Romane Webb, 41, and Dexter O’Neal Miles, 52, were identified as the victims in the fatal shootings which occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Chestnut Street.

Weldon police Chief Christopher Davis said, “I appreciate the governor’s office for putting up the $25,000 reward for helping us in figuring out who committed this horrific crime and to give closure to both families.”

A $2,000 reward posted by an anonymous donor is currently retracted, Davis said.

The police department had to launch a new investigation into the case in January after two men who were initially charged had the counts lodged against them dismissed.

A dismissal form for Jacob Keith Alston noted that there was insufficient evidence to warrant prosecution because after the charges were filed additional evidence came to light showing that the defendant was not in the state of North Carolina at the time of the crime.

The document said a second interview of the surviving victim showed conflicting stories in how the crime occurred and there was no corroborating evidence existing to reinforce the victim’s statement regarding the defendant.

The dismissal form for Omar Ponton said there was no evidence which existed that showed he actually committed the crime and no evidence that the defendant participated in the commission of the crime.

The police department said at the time Webb and Miles were found inside the residence while the third victim was found down the street in the general area after fleeing.

Officers arrived at the location of the shooting and learned three people had been shot.

Webb and Miles were pronounced dead at the scene.
