A Weldon man was charged this morning in a shooting which left a woman with a head injury from which she is expected to recover.

Weldon police Chief Christopher Davis said 26-year-old Trevonte Clanton was charged with discharging a weapon into a moving vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and possession of a weapon by a felon. He received a $100,000 secured bond and is scheduled for a district court appearance Thursday.

The police department received a call shortly after 7:45 this morning about a man walking in the area of Cedar Street carrying an assault rifle, Davis said. Shortly after that call the police department received another call that a woman had been shot in the back of the head. The victim drove herself to the hospital and is expected to recover from the injuries.

With assistance from Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies, units checked the area and were initially unable to locate a person carrying a weapon.

Davis and Corporal H. Cross, who responded to the call, continued their investigation. Cross determined that Clanton was the person carrying the weapon and the one who shot into the victim’s vehicle, Davis said.

“The Weldon Police Department would like to thank the anonymous citizens that called this morning and all the deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office that assisted during this incident,” Davis said. “This definitely shows how working together works.”
