The Roanoke Rapids Police Department is continuing its Safety Pup program for the seventh year.

The Safety Pup program is designed for children in grades pre-K through fifth and is done in conjunction with the National Child Safety Council.

“We are pleased with the materials and services provided by the National Child Safety Council,” Roanoke Rapids Chief Bobby Martin said. “Our department has received many compliments and thank you letters from the community and children regarding our program.”

The NCSC is a federal not-for-profit organization which for over 64 years has helped law enforcement throughout 48 states coordinate effective child safety educational programs, said Dale Royer, a council coordinator. “The educator-designed materials Chief Martin receives each year are filled with games, pictures, puzzles, riddles and rhymes and songs. NCSC has developed a way to make the rules of safety fun and easy to learn.”

The materials reach youngsters at their age level and contain topics that can affect a child’s life, Royer said. “Safety Pup has become a safety hero and positive role model for our young children. Safety Pup is a fun-loving puppy, and a visible reminder to stay safe and drug-free.” Martin said the department is currently mailing letters of request seeking financial support for the program. “The Safety Pup program is solely provided by the generous contributions of our local concerned business, industrial, financial leaders, military, and civic organizations,” he said.  “We need their help to keep the Safety Pup program ongoing each year.”

Officers from the department will visit with over 1,000 children during the school year and will distribute and discuss over 4,350 pieces of material. “Recognition is given to all who contribute to our program on the prestige page of the work-study manuals,” Martin said.

Anyone who would like to be included as a sponsor and help support the program is encouraged to send a donation to the police department at PO Box 38, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 and mail it to the attention of Martin. Checks should be made payable to the National Child Safety Council.
