Nine pounds of medicine and eighteen liquids will be properly destroyed later this week.

On Saturday narcotic agents of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, representatives of the Halifax County Department of Social Services and health department collected unused medications at Walgreens.

This event was scheduled during the Drug Enforcement Administration’s nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back initiative.

Captain A.M. Harris said during the event citizens were able to turn over unused medication from their homes to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft.

Through a partnership with NC Safe Kids citizens were allowed to receive a locking medicine case if needed. “We still have several available,” Harris said.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office holds these events several times throughout the county to prevent poisonings, abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
