The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:
On Monday shortly after 10 p.m. Detective S. Bryant and Lieutenant J. Baggett received a complaint of a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through the area of Carolina Avenue and Ninth Street.
The officers did not locate the vehicle on their initial check but stayed in the area.
A short time later the vehicle came through the area at a high rate of speed.
Officers got behind the vehicle which was being operated by a man later identified as Darius Lewter, 34, in a careless and reckless manner.
The officers conducted a traffic stop and encountered Lewter, who began to drive off slowly when the officers approached but stopped.
Lewter, of Roanoke Rapids, was placed under arrest and taken before a magistrate who charged him with DWI and resist, delay, and obstruct.
He received a $500 secured bond and April 25 court date.

On Friday shortly before 2 p.m. at Detective M. Hunsucker was conducting a foot patrol in the area of Family Dollar on Highway 158 when he was notified by one of the employees that a man later identified as Vance Parker, 63, entered the business and was stealing items.
Parker fled the business and Hunsucker gave chase around the back of the store.
Parker, of Roanoke Rapids, attempted to hide by lying down but was unsuccessful.
He was taken into custody and charged with felony habitual larceny and possession of a crack pipe.
He received a $2,000 secured bond.
The $25 worth of hygiene products Parker attempted to steal were recovered.
