Two 18-year-olds have been charged with stealing a vehicle its owner was de-icing at the time, the Weldon Police Department said.

The arrests of Christopher Allen Solomon of Rocky Mount and Tyquan Deshawn Mitchell of Scotland Neck came after Sergeant T. Mason received a report Tuesday from an anonymous caller that a stolen vehicle was traveling in the area of Elm Street. The call came in around 4 p.m.

Chief Christopher Davis said the vehicle was described as one stolen earlier in the day from the East Eighth Street area.

Mason located the vehicle and the driver picked up speed. After a brief chase the driver crashed in the 500 block of West Third Street.

Mitchell and Solomon were taken before a magistrate.

Solomon was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, injury to personal property, felony speed to elude arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle and no operators license. He received a $10,000 secured bond. Mitchell was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and received a $1,500 secured bond. The men have Friday court dates.

Mason was assisted by Davis, Corporal H. Cross, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies R. Chin and I. Smith, and Trooper W.H. Wheeler of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Davis said at the time the vehicle was stolen it was being de-iced with the door unlocked. “If you plan to warm up your vehicles in the morning or any other time, do so with the doors locked to prevent anyone jumping in and taking off with it. This includes at service stations as well. Do not leave your vehicle unattended while the same is running.”
