The percentage of new positive cases of COVID-19 has increased in Halifax County to 40.8 percent compared to last week’s percentage of 39.3.

Halifax County currently has the sixth highest rate of COVID-19 infections throughout the 100 counties in North Carolina. It, along with the other 99 counties in the state, remains in the red category which means a high level of community transmission.

Today the health department added 1,113 new positive cases to its data which brings the total number of positives since March of 2020 to 12,057.

Data on recoveries and current patients was not available. There have been 150 deaths related to the virus.

Health Director Bruce Robistow was not immediately available for comment today but said in the report there are two things residents can do to stem the increase.

“Get fully vaccinated and boosted. Until we have a much larger number of citizens that are fully vaccinated and boosted, COVID will continue to mutate and a return to normal will be delayed.”

He said residents should follow the Three W’s — frequent handwashing, waiting 6-feet part and wearing a facial covering — aggressively, with emphasis on mask wearing. “As a reminder, wearing the surgical mask or cloth mask only prevents you from spreading COVID. These masks do very little to protect you from others. So, for masking to work, everyone needs to do it when in confined areas and when indoors, at events, restaurants, retail stores.

“The CDC is now recommending the wearing of the N95 mask that does provide two way protection; preventing you from spreading the virus and also protecting you from getting it. These masks are readily available and highly recommended.”
