The Roanoke Valley and other locations east of Interstate 95 will be under a winter storm warning this evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning goes into effect from 7 this evening to 7 Saturday morning.

The affected areas for this warning include Halifax, Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson and Wayne counties.

What is expected is heavy mixed precipitation with total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches and ice accumulations which amount to a light glaze.

Throughout central North Carolina wet roads could freeze Thursday night when temperatures drop below freezing.

In its update this afternoon the Raleigh bureau of the National Weather service said rain will gradually mix with and change to snow or sleet late this afternoon and evening. While the snow is expected to be light, a coating of up to 1 inch of snow or sleet may accumulate north of the Highway 64 corridor.

Sub-freezing temperatures are expected to pour into the region late this evening, which will create a scenario for black ice where water from the earlier rain has not dried up yet on roads.

Confidence is fairly high, the NWS said, that snow will accumulate along and east of Interstate 95 Friday evening with the highest amounts farther north and east to Northeastern North Carolina.

Sleet will likely mix with snow across the southern Coastal Plain region and will limit the snow accumulation depth.

The key points, the NWS said, is that the area of snow across the eastern half of the state will begin moving east as the system moves away and the snow will be over across central North Carolina by 3 a.m. Saturday. However, hazardous travel conditions will remain across the Eastern Piedmont and along and east of I-95.
