Weldon police have arrested two people in a shooting which claimed the life of a man and woman last April and initially left another person injured.

Chief Christopher Davis said Omar Daquan Ponton, 29, of Weldon, was taken into custody on November 5 by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office while Jason Keith Alston, 33, of Weldon was taken into custody Tuesday. Alston was apprehended with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Both men face two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of  Levita Romane Webb, 41, and Dexter O’Neal Miles, 52.

Webb, who Davis said investigators believe was an innocent bystander in the case, was from Weldon while Miles was from Garysburg.

Davis said investigators believe Ponton and Alston were acquainted with the third victim in the case who survived the shooting in the 400 block of Chestnut Street on April 6.

Ponton and Alston each face a count of attempted murder involving the person who survived as well as a count each of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Davis declined to elaborate on the motive. A reward established in the case was not used.

Both men were jailed without the opportunity for bond and have January 27 district court dates.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. at Webb’s residence in the 400 block of Chestnut Street, Davis said at the time.

The police department said Webb and Miles were found inside the residence while the third victim was found down the street in the general area after fleeing.

Officers arrived at the location of the shooting and learned three people had been shot.

Webb and Miles were pronounced dead at the scene.
