Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a string of vehicle break-ins which occurred Tuesday morning between 1 and 4. Break-ins have also occurred through the weekend.

The vehicles which were broken into were unlocked, Chief Bobby Martin said, and items such as electronics, weapons, and change were taken.

Thus far no arrests have been as police are still in the beginning stages of investigation.

Martin said approximately 20 vehicles have been broken into.

In a post on its Facebook page the police department said the break-ins have occurred in the areas of Old Farm Road, Chase Avenue, Long Circle, and Eagle Court as well as other areas in that vicinity.

In the social media post Martin said, “We believe we have a suspect but we are still working on proving it.”

The police department recommends the following:

Have your yard well lit at night.

Utilize surveillance cameras.  “They help us identify suspects and there are many relatively cheap options on the market that work great.”

Never leave your car unlocked.

Don't leave valuable items inside your vehicle. There were large amounts of cash taken and a “super expensive hunting rifle” to name a few.

Don't leave key fobs in your cars.  Two of the cars entered this weekend had key fobs in them.  “Even if you have nothing of value in your cars please lock them,” the post said. “You don't want a criminal sitting in your car even long enough for them to realize they aren't getting anything.  If your car was entered recently — even if nothing was taken — and you didn't report it please do so. That also helps us know crime statistics and helps us better serve you. It can give us a better idea of where the criminal is operating. Please help us out by doing your part on some of the tips we listed.”
