The Halifax County Health Department today added five deaths related to COVID-19 and 286 new cases since its report last week.
The deaths related to the virus now stand at 121 while the total number of positive cases since March of last year are at 6,629.
There have been 6,006 patients who have recovered — 91.89 percent — and 412 active cases — 5.15 percent — the health department reported.
“We have a virus that mutated because we did not take advantage of the vaccine and didn’t get to a herd immunity months ago,” Health Director Bruce Robistow said this afternoon. “This allowed the virus to mutate to a stronger, more infectious variant. The spike that we’re experiencing at such a rapid level is the end result of a virus not kept in check by reaching herd immunity.”
Robistow said not getting vaccinated at a high level immediately will allow the virus to continue to mutate. “The only solution is for everyone to get vaccinated. It is time to put differences aside and get the job done.”
The health director said even with the surging numbers he is not expecting a shutdown of businesses like happened last year. “When everything was shut down last year there was no recourse. Now we have an alternative to shutting everything down — a cure, a solution, and no one wants to take it.”
He said the health department is currently recommending booster shots of the COVID vaccine for anyone who is immunocompromised.
