Halifax Community College recently recognized students, faculty, and staff members for excellent achievements during the 2020 and 2021 school years. 

Allen Purser, executive director of the HCC Foundation, served as the master of ceremonies.

HCC President Michael Elam welcomed in-person and virtual attendees to the ceremony..

Thomas Barrett Jr., the chairman of the HCC Board of Trustees, offered greetings that emphasized how proud he was of the achievements of students, faculty, and staff.

Jaquan Edwards, a member of HCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, followed Barrett with an invocation that highlighted the importance of community and its role in academic success. 

Deans list and president’s list

Dr. Barbara Hasty, vice president of enrollment management and student services, and Dawn Veliky, registrar and director of veterans affairs, presented awards to students who were in attendance. There were 180 students recognized for making the dean’s list, president’s list, or both.

Retirements and years of service 

Robin St. Sing, Kent Dickerson, June-Ellen Grant, and Melinda Cox are this year’s HCC retirees.

Donna Sellers has worked at HCC for 25 years.

Tyrone Parker, Pat Hux, Dawn Veliky, James McCachren, and Linda Smith have worked at HCC for 20 years.

Joanne Jolly-Ellis has worked at HCC for 15 years.

Emmanuel Obi, Lisa Santiago, James Lynch, Allisha Hicks, and Caroline Harris

have worked at HCC for 10 years.

Gary R. Redding, Malcolm Renn, Nichole Pitchford, Brandon Davis, Kelly Eller, Ashley Covington-Carter, Sabrina Freeman, Wilbert Nicholson, and Maria Navarro have worked at HCC for five years.

HCC Distinguished Service Award recipients

Gary R. Redding received the Excellence in Teaching Full-time Award. The Excellence in Teaching Full-time Award is presented to the HCC faculty member who exemplifies the highest quality and standards of instruction.

Angela Williams received the Excellence in Academic Advising Award. The Excellence in Academic Advising Award is presented to the HCC faculty member and advisor who exemplifies the highest quality and standards of advising students.

Dr. Elizabeth Bartels received the Excellence in Teaching Part-time Award. The Excellence in Teaching Part-time Award is presented to the HCC faculty member who exemplifies the highest quality and standards of instruction.

Arlene Moore received the Staff Award. The Staff Award is presented to the HCC staff member who demonstrates consistent and excellent performance on the job.

Kelly Eller received the Innovator Award. The Innovator Award is presented to the HCC employee who has implemented a fresh or new idea that addresses HCC’s mission.

Derrick Flood received the Spirit Award. The Spirit Award is presented to the HCC employee who exemplifies cooperation and enthusiasm and serves as a positive reflection of HCC’s mission.

Sonya Robinson received the Presidential Leadership Award. The Presidential Leadership Award is presented to an HCC employee who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in support of HCC’s mission.
