A New York woman died in a multiple-vehicle collision Friday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

According to a preliminary report by Trooper C.A. Hill, the collision occurred on Interstate 95 around 11:15 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids area.

The crash occurred when the driver of a Pontiac Trans Am, Dennis Earl Gentry Jr. of North Carolina, was traveling south at a high rate of speed and failed to reduce speed for slower traffic.

Gentry collided with a Ford hybrid driven by Dawn M. Houppert, 58, of Kirkville, New York, which caused her vehicle to collide with a Hyundai Tucson with New Jersey tags. The Tucson then collided with a Hyundai Veloster. Debris from the collision caused damage to a GMC Sierra.

Houppert was pronounced deceased at the scene by Halifax County EMS, according to the report.

Gentry, the driver of the Pontiac, was airlifted to Greenville for treatment and his condition was not immediately known this morning.

The status of pending charges against the driver was also not immediately known this morning.
