A crash in the Enfield area Monday night claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman and a 6-year-old child.

Sergeant Levern Bynum Jr. of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said this morning another child who was a passenger in the vehicle is in critical condition and was put into a medically-induced coma. Two other children and an adult passenger are in stable condition, he said.

Bynum said alcohol use may have contributed to the single-vehicle crash which occurred on Beaverdam Road near the intersection of Highway 561.

According to a preliminary report by Trooper W.H. Wheeler, Tyesha Brinkley of Enfield was driving north on Beaverdam Road when she crossed the centerline to the left and collided with a ditch. The vehicle continued to travel north across the roadway. It collided with another ditch and overturned several times.

Brinkley was pronounced deceased at the scene and Jahan Futrell Jr. of the Murfreesboro area was airlifted to Greenville and later succumbed to his injuries.

Bynum said results of a toxicology report and medical examiner’s report are pending.
