A Roanoke Rapids man and an inmate at the Halifax County Detention Center were charged Thursday with a plot to mail the opioid suboxone to the inmate.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the sheriff’s office said the contraband was seized at the jail.

Robert Godsey, 66, and the inmate, Heather Stansbury, 39, were both charged with conspiracy to introduce contraband into a detention facility. They received $15,000 bonds and August 19 court dates.

Hall said in a statement on June 23 jail staff received a tip contraband would be sent via mail.

Detective Travis Clark began investigating and learned Godsey and Stansbury conspired to have the contraband mailed.

Clark seized the substance after detention officers intercepted it.
