A Weldon man was arrested and charged Saturday in an assault and sexual crime which occurred June 3 in the area of Aurelian Springs and Branch Farm roads in the Roanoke Rapids area.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the victim and the person charged — Travis Kentel Webb, 40 — were familiar with one another.

The assault charge filed against Webb reflects he reportedly struck the victim with their vehicle after stealing it. The sexual charge reflects a count of second-degree rape.

Hall declined comment on whether the sexual assault occurred in the vehcile and said it was undetermined whether the motive was rape. Personal items belonging to the victim were also taken, Hall confirmed.

In a statement Hall said deputies responded to the area of Aurelian Springs Road after receiving a call of an assault and theft around 6:30 the morning of June 3.

The victim was transported to Vidant North and was treated and released for several injuries.

Further investigation by Sergeant H.P. Phillips and Detective R.G. Jenkins led to warrants filed for the arrest of Webb on charges of assault with a deadly with intent to kill inflicting serious injury; second-degree rape; larceny of a motor vehicle; and larceny.

Webb was arrested Saturday and received a $200,000 bond and July 15 court date.
