The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Monday evening seized 56 pills and nearly 3 grams of cocaine after responding to a residence on Highway 158 for a 911 open line call.

The seizure of drugs and arrest of Antwan Smith on opiate trafficking and possession counts occurred after Corporal Raymond Chin approached a vehicle parked in the yard of the residence in 2000 block of Highway 158 around 7 p.m., Captain A.M. Harris said in a statement. He smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and requested assistance from Sergeant J. Matthews and Corporal D. Moore.

During a search of the vehicle, Chin seized 50 hydrocodone pills, six methadone pills, approximately 2.6 grams of cocaine and cash. Hydrocodone is value at $10 per pill; methadone at $5 per pill and the value of the cocaine is about $150, Harris said.

Harris described Smith as a reputed mid-level dealer.

The residence where the 911 call was received was Smith’s, Harris confirmed.

It was not clear who made the 911 call or whether it was done to trap Smith. “I don’t know if anyone set it up,” Harris said.

Chin arrested and charged Smith, 37, of Roanoke Rapids, for trafficking opiates, felony possession of cocaine and two counts of possession with intent to sell/deliver schedule II controlled substance.

He received a $15,000 bond and September 19 date.
