State Farm Agent Chris Canady donated $500 to Angel’s Closet Director Gilbert Portela Monday, funds which will be used for the ministry’s food bank.
Canady said State Farm will match the donation. “I really felt like it was a great cause. The community has been good to me and this is a way to give back.”
Portela said, “This is what it takes, the community coming together. It’s a blessing.”
Angel’s Closet is preparing for its next food distribution Friday at 8:30 a.m., Portela said.
The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Roanoke Rapids Fire Department will be at Tru Storage and U-Haul, which is located in the former Barnes Sales and Service building on West Tenth Street across from Browning’s.
There they will hand out 200 boxes of food containing 12 meals each. Each food package in the box contains a heater to warm the food. Portela said Angel’s Closet will also be handing out bags of potatoes during the distribution, along with Gatorade.
The distribution is limited to one box per car.
The food giveaway came as a solution to the organization’s food bank ministry as Angel’s Closet is currently closed because of COVID-19.
Portela said the last distribution was successful and 2,590 meals were distributed.
