Roanoke Valley schools will be closed starting Monday.

Most area schools — Gaston College Prep, Halifax County Schools, Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School, KIPP Halifax, and Northampton County Schools — will be closed through March 27.

Roanoke Rapids schools, in an alert sent out this evening, said it would be closed through at least March 30 “in accordance with the emergency declaration from the governor in response to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19. This includes Roanoke Rapids Early College High School.”

The RRGSD said it was in the process of determining if it can provide school nutrition for students. This information will be shared in the coming days.

“While we were hopeful to remain open, we must comply with these directives,” the system said. “All campuses will be open on Monday to allow staff only to retrieve items they may need.”

Weldon City Schools also announced it would be closed Monday and there would be no school for at least two weeks. “For the moment, students will return to school on March 30th,” the announcement on the system’s website said. “We will reassess our situation prior to then, and make a decision at a later date regarding possibly extending that time if it becomes necessary.”

Weldon City Schools staff should plan to report to work on Monday. “Additional information will be shared with employees following a conference call that is scheduled with state officials. We will continue to do all that we can to provide support to our students, staff, and community.”
