The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office will be checking compliance on sex offenders Halloween.

Sheriff Wes Tripp said all citizens should be on the lookout and contact authorities if any registered sex offender is involved in any suspicious activity as children are trick-or-treating in neighborhoods, churches, schools, or any other locations within the county.

Tripp said sex offenders may not give out candy, go to any Halloween activities which includes those sponsored by churches or municipalities.

He said it is best that registered sex offenders turn their porch lights off during the evening. “Turning their lights on could be interpreted as inviting children. It is a violation.”

There are no specific trick-or-treating hours in unincorporated areas of the county, Tripp said. “I would remind those participating if they don't see a porch light on, then don't knock on the door and move to the next house.”

Anyone seeking more information on sex offenders in their neighborhoods may visit the state sex offender registry.
