City Manager Joseph Scherer reported to council this evening three events have been booked at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre.

He also reported to the panel he has received two proposals from firms interested in marketing the venue for potential sale.

The events booked since the departure of HSV Entertainment at the end of May include a wedding, a church service planned by the Reverend Welton Worsham of Four Oaks and what Public Works Director Larry Chalker described as a party for adults 21 and up which will use the front of the building and lobby.

Scherer said following the meeting the city still has to determine the best way to utilize the firm ultimately selected for marketing and get conditions from Bank of America should the venue be sold.

In another matter this evening, council heard from Beth-Ellan Burch, who requested council either revise its animal ordinance to allow for the raising of backyard chickens or give her permission to keep chickens.

“In my effort to be self-sufficient, I want to be able to keep backyard chickens to supplement my diet,” she told council.

Mayor Emery Doughtie explained to her following her comments, “We generally listen to what a citizen has to say” and consider it later.
