A Roanoke Rapids man has been charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child following an initial investigation by Roanoke Rapids police.
Detective Obert Wiltsie of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said the police department received the report on September 15 and investigation showed the crime occurred in the jurisdiction of the sheriff's office.
The case was turned over to the sheriff's office in March and investigation led to the arrest of Quentin Rudolph Smith, 64, today after charges were filed last week.
Wiltsie said Smith was familiar with the victim, who was under the age of 13, but was not a guardian. He said Smith reportedly took advantage of opportunities to sexually assault the child.
He was arrested today at the sheriff's office around 10 a.m. without problems. He received a $25,000 bond and August 19 court date.
