The North Carolina State Highway Patrol will begin Operation Stop Arm enforcement Monday.

Sergeant M.P. Cape said the enforcement will begin at 6 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. The enforcement will run through next Friday.

“Operation Stop Arm 2018 is a five-day campaign in North Carolina where local and state law enforcement will crack down on the illegal passing of stop school busses,” Cape said.

“The thing we’re going to be looking for is people following too close and making sure they stop when the stop arm is out,” said Trooper Scott Richardson. “We’ll also be looking for safety on the bus and other violations that occur around or near the bus. We have a no tolerance policy when it comes to violations concerning school bus safety.”

A proclamation by Governor Roy Cooper honoring school bus drivers says some 13,000 school busses carry about 790,000 students to and from school across the state.

The state says nearly 3,000 drivers disregard school bus stop arms.

In the 2016-2017 school year, some 5,653 Roanoke Valley students were taken to and from school in a bus.
