The Davie Volunteer Fire Department this morning handed investigation of a house fire on Highway 158 to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
Davie Chief David Padgett declined to discuss specific reasons why the fire was suspicious, only to say there was no apparent source such as faulty wiring.
Davie firefighters, with assistance from Rheasville and Littleton, responded after receiving the call at 9379 Highway 158 in the Summit area shortly after 4:45 a.m.
Heavy smoke was coming from the residence, which is near Three Lakes Grocery, and firefighters found a smoldering fire in a back bedroom.
The fire was contained within five minutes but firefighters stayed on the scene until 6 a.m. The fire caused mainly smoke damage. The fire apparently started, Padgett said, on top of a bed, which had no mattress, but had a box spring on which various items were piled on top.
There were no injuries.
A report from the sheriff's office was not immediately available.
