Three of the four schools in Weldon City Schools met academic growth standards for the 2013-2014 school year under Accountability Results recently released by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Two of the three schools meeting growth, exceeded expected growth standards.
Weldon Elementary School met expected growth, while Weldon High School and Weldon Middle School exceeded expected growth. Roanoke Valley Early College did not meet expected growth, the system said in a statement.
State reporting of End-of-Grade and End-of-Course test results show that Weldon City Schools showed improvements in many tested areas during the 2013-2014 Academic Year. English Language Arts/Reading English Language Arts/Reading proficiency, based upon state reporting, increased in six out of seven tested areas.
Most noted are those listed below:
Grade 4 English Language Arts/Reading increased proficiency by 12.5 percentage points. Grade 7 English Language Arts/ Reading increased proficiency by 24.9 percentage points. Grade 8 English Language Arts/Reading proficiency increased by 11.8 percentage points. English II proficiency increased by 23.7 percentage points.
Mathematics
Mathematics proficiency, based upon state reporting, increased in each of the seven tested areas.
Most noted are those listed below:
Grade 3 - Mathematics proficiency increased by 9 percentage points. Grade 5 - Mathematics proficiency grew by over 17.6 percentage points. Grade 7 - Mathematics increased in proficiency by 7.2 points. Math I increased by 29.5 percentage points.
Science
Science proficiency, based upon state reporting, increased in two of the three tested areas. Grade 5 Science increased in proficiency by 20.5 percentage points. Biology proficiency grew by 18.3 percentage points.
Other performance indicator highlights for the district level included:
• LEA four-year graduation rate at 90.7 percent. This indicates an 18.3 percent point change.
The five-year graduation rate for Weldon City Schools is at 93.5 percentage points reflecting a 5.5 percent point growth.
• The percent of high school concentrators earning the nationally recognized Career Readiness Certification by scoring at the silver or gold level on the ACT WorkKeys improved by 19 percentage points.
“Our students, staff and communities have worked together over the course of the last school year to focus on improved student achievement,” Superintendent Elie Bracy III said in a statement. “As noted in the above mentioned highlights, we have made great strides towards our goal. Although we recognize growth as being paramount to ultimately reach our goal of all students comprehending reading material, reasoning and processing data both mathematically and scientifically, we must set our sights even higher. Preparing students for careers and college will require the continued support of everyone in each student’s life.” Said Bracy: “Parents, community partners, teachers, support staff, administrators board of education members and, most importantly, the students of Weldon City Schools are to be commended for their hard work and continued focus on academic excellence.”
