A Virginia man died Friday afternoon following a mishap involving a rope swing on Lake Gaston.
Halifax County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Eastern Shores subdivision area around 3 p.m. and found 20-year-old Alex Hable of Midlothian deceased, Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement.
Early investigation indicates that Hable was using a rope tied to a tree to swing into the lake. He was found, however, on a rock.
Tripp said the rope or tree did not give way, but declined further elaboration as further investigation by the sheriff's office and North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission continues.
Halifax EMS and the Littleton Volunteer Fire Department responded.
Tripp said with help from Littleton firefighters, the tree, which is only accessible by boat, was cut down.
