A man sustained a broken jaw after he was pistol-whipped and robbed of a pack of cigarettes in early November.

Today the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, after investigation by Detective J.M. Clark and Deputy Matt Brown, arrested Jamil Markel Simmons, 22, of Roanoke Rapids.
Clark said Simmons was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault inflicting serious bodily injury and communicating threats.
Simmons was in the South Weldon area where he has family when the robbery occurred.
A pack of cigarettes was taken from the victim and he was pistol-whipped with a handgun.
The victim was taken to a local hospital following the robbery and then transferred to an undisclosed facility for further treatment. He was released and is now recovering from his injuries.
Simmons was jailed on $15,000 bond and has a January 22 court date.
