An Enfield man who allegedly broke into a vehicle of a business owner got a surprise when he was chased by the victim and another person who was able to get a good description that helped lead to his arrest today.
“It's a big help,” Enfield Police Department Lieutenant Jerry Powell said of citizen observation and them getting solid suspect descriptions.
The events that led to the arrest of 18-year-old Jamonte Green of Tucker Street began shortly after 11 this morning when officers were dispatched to the area of North Railroad Street on a call of a suspect running from the scene of a vehicle breaking and entering.
Working from a description and information obtained by dispatchers, the man later identified as Green was observed entering a wooded area between North Railroad and Dennis streets.
He was apprehended a short time later for the vehicle breaking and entering and warrants for unrelated charges, Powell said.
Green was taken back to the scene where he was identified by the victim as being the person who fled the scene.
The victim, Gayle Locke, owner of Mear's Jewelry, stated that she heard a noise in the alleyway behind her store and that when she checked, she observed the man identified as Green allegedly entering her 2004 Yukon after using a piece of concrete block to smash the window of the locked vehicle.
Upon seeing Locke, he dropped a small bag he allegedly took from the vehicle, with the victim chasing him to Whitfield Street.
A person Powell described as a Good Samaritan picked up the chase and was able to get a complete description of Green.
Surveillance footage from a camera on Whitfield Street also allegedly showed Green running from the scene.
Police charged Green with breaking and entering a motor vehicle, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was given a $5,000 secured bond for these charges. Green was also given a $1,000 secured bond for the warrant that was served for trespassing and communicating threats.
Powell said Green has already been convicted on two breaking and entering charges and is a possible suspect in a couple of more breaking and entering cases in town.
