A kitchen fire at 915 Glover Street Monday night was contained to the cooking area, the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department reported.

The kitchen sustained fire damage and there was smoke and heat damage throughout, Chief Stacy Coggins said.

Roanoke Rapids firefighters responded to the call shortly after 8:30 and observed heavy smoke coming from the single-story wood-framed house and fire coming from a window.

Firefighters had the fire contained in about three to four minutes, using water from a booster tank.

Coggins termed the fire a cooking accident.

The Red Cross was dispatched, as the family needed accommodations following the fire.
