A high-speed chase with a motorcycle Tuesday morning resulted in a Roanoke Rapids man’s arrest on driving violations as well as the discovery of outstanding warrants in Hertford County and Virginia.

Roanoke Rapids police said Officer Thomas Massey observed a blue Yamaha motorcycle operated by a man later identified as Gilvey Dale Cook, 32, of Washington Street, coming down the 300 to 400 block of Franklin Street at a high rate of speed.
Cook turned right onto West Fifth Street and Massey activated his blue lights and siren.
Cook allegedly led Massey on a chase that involved him passing in the center lane and attaining speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.
The chase continued to Thelma Road where Cook apparently tried to slow down, but lost control and wrecked in a grassy area.
Cook was not injured but was charged with flee to elude arrest, fail to heed blue light and siren, speeding, no operators license, fail to stop for red light, drive left of center, center lane violation and aggressive driving. He was also served a warrant out of Hertford County for larceny. Records also indicate he was wanted in Virginia for unknown charges. Virginia declined to extradite him.
Police don’t know why he was driving fast down Franklin Street but believe he allegedly engaged Massey in a chase because of the outstanding warrants.
He received a $2,000 bond and has a July 24 court date.
The state Highway Patrol assisted.
