The state Highway Patrol announced a preliminary number of 13 motorists who died on North Carolina highways during the Memorial Day weekend. 

Those figures include one that occurred Sunday night involving a Brooklyn, New York, man who was riding a friend’s motorcycle in the Littleton area.

The holiday weekend officially began at 6 p.m. on Friday and ended at midnight, Monday. 

Last year the Highway Patrol investigated five fatal collisions and 360 injury related collisions during the holiday period.

During this holiday period, troopers investigated 12 twelve fatal collisions resulting in 13 deaths on North Carolina highways.

The following is a breakdown of the location and highway of each fatality:

Highway 42, 4.49 miles east of Wilson

State Road 1401, 2.8 miles west of Bolivia

Highway 226, 3 miles south of Marion

Interstate 40, 5.7 miles north of Wilmington

State Road 2217, 1.7 miles east of Asheboro

State Road 1400, 6.4 miles south of Vanceboro

State Road 1624, 2.3 miles west of Hamlet

State Road 1750, 7.2 miles south of Greenville

State Road 1413, locally known as Summit Road, 5 miles east of Littleton

Highway 64, 2 miles south of Knightdale, which was a double fatality

State Road 1201, 19.1 miles west from Lillington

State Road 1130, 5.6 miles north of Holden Beach
