Areas in Roanoke Rapids hit hard by August flooding faired well this afternoon during a pounding thunderstorm that brought sustained rains.
There was local flooding in some areas, City Manager Joseph Scherer said in a press release issued this evening and some streets were temporarily closed.
Recreation facilities sustained minor damage. The city manager said in a telephone interview some ball fields had dirt washed away and there was a small amount of flooding in the Lloyd Andrews building.
“The city was in constant contact with county emergency management agency officials during and after the event,” Scherer said in the press release. “Fortunately, no additional assistance was needed except by the North Carolina Department of Transportation for flooded main roads under their control.”
Public works employees, along with police and fire department members, responded to affected areas for traffic control, evaluation of flood prone areas and to offer individual assistance if needed.
“As far as we know, no one was displaced by flooding,” Scherer said. “The city hall telephone system was knocked out early during the storm. I’d like to apologize to anyone who tried to contact us and was unable to. The system was restored by 5:30 p.m.”
Scherer cautioned some streets are still experiencing water run off and motorists are cautioned about driving into running water where the depth is not known.
Those roads, mainly in flood prone areas, are expected to be clear by midnight.
Scherer said he was pleased that the areas where flood repairs have been made came through unscathed. “Some of the areas we have worked on since the August flood have functioned as they should and helped alleviate flooding problems,” he said in the telephone interview.
Scherer said it was not immediately clear how much rain fell during the storm.
