A marital dispute ended in a murder-suicide Monday afternoon in Scotland Neck.
Town Police Chief Joe Williams said police were originally dispatched to Greenwood Street shortly after 12:45 p.m. but then determined the shooting occurred inside a residence at 207 East 8th Street.
Christopher Jones, 35, and his wife, Lakesha, 31, apparently were having marital issues when Mrs. Jones went to her mother’s to get some rest.
Mr. Jones, Williams said, came over to the house, apparently to talk to his wife.
Mrs. Jones’ mother, who was outside, heard two shots from inside her house and told authorities both appeared to be deceased.
Investigation, Williams said, showed Mr. Jones shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.
The couple was lying within three to four feet of each other. Both died from head wounds from a 9mm handgun.
Mrs. Jones was a Desert Storm veteran and was active in school booster programs at Southeast High School, Williams said. She was involved in parent programs at Enfield Middle School where her two children attended.
Williams said there had been no previous calls about the couple arguing and that the problems appeared to be recent. “She hadn’t discussed anything with us or complained to us.”
