Fire this evening gutted a trailer in Colonial Mobile Home Park and sent its occupant, who was apparently smoking while on oxygen, to the hospital.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening, said Lieutenant Michael Manning of the Davie Volunteer Fire Department.

Manning said firefighters retrieved four small oxygen bottles and a 4-foot bottle from the debris left inside. They continued searching for another bottle believed to be inside. He said it is unclear whether there was an explosion.

The fire department received the call shortly before 5 p.m. and found the front of the mobile home, located at 362 Colonial Drive, engulfed.

Firefighters from Davie and Rheasville, which also responded, got the fire under control in about 10 minutes, despite heavy winds fueling the flames.

Davie Training Officer Jason Patrick said firefighters had to shuttle water to the scene because there are no hydrants in the park.

“I feel like they need to have access to fire hydrants,” park owner Faye Spencer said as she watched firefighters put out hotspots fueled by the wind. “Nobody thinks this little community needs anything.”

Spencer said the occupant of the trailer was known to smoke despite being on oxygen. “They took him to the hospital. He’ll do as well as he’s always been. You can’t smoke and use oxygen. He’s been doing it for years. It caught up with him today.”

Spencer said the trailer burned quickly.

Manning said firefighters at this point have not been able to determine in which room the fire started.
