The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains found Sunday afternoon near a creek embankment in Halifax.
Chief Deputy Wes Tripp declined elaboration this morning but said in a news release a local family found the remains shortly before 1:45 p.m. near an embankment closest to the Highway 561 railroad bridge.
Further investigation confirmed the remains were human. Tripp declined to say whether the remains were male or female.
The sheriff’s office and state Bureau of Investigation secured the area and completed a crime scene investigation. The matter will continue to be investigated.
Tripp declined to comment on factors the sheriff’s office may look into, such as missing person reports or unsolved crimes.
He said another news release would be issued following the completion of the investigation.
