More economic development projects are under consideration in Halifax County, discussion and action taken at this morning’s commissioners meeting indicates.

The board held two public hearings, one for a project in the Weldon area that represents a $3.3 million investment and one for a project in Enfield that represents a $55 million investment.

Action taken by commissioners following the hearings approves a $65,500 incentive grant for the Weldon project that is payable in a five-year installment, County Attorney Glynn Rollins told the board.

In the resolution the board approved it is noted the company will make a $3.3 million investment within three years of locating in the county, creating 40 permanent jobs that exceed the current weekly wage here.

The second public hearing focused on an incentive package and conveyance of property to a manufacturing company that is considering locating adjacent to a company that has already announced plans to build a $10 million sawmill off Highway 301.

The county, contingent on the company locating, is willing to offer $200,000 as an incentive grant, which county Economic Development Director Kathy Scott explained would be a match to a similar state grant.

The company plans to make a $55 million investment over the first three years of operation if it locates in the county and would create 75 jobs.

The county has an option on 234.5 acres of land where the company is considering locating. Scott said the fair market value of the land is $1.2 million. The company plans to pay wages of $15.75 an hour.

Scott declined to give the names of the companies or elaborate on what they would do. She said the building in the Weldon area is not related to any the town has recently bought.
