An arrest was made during the execution of a search warrant Friday that led to a shootout with officers.

Chief Deputy Wes Tripp of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said this morning Darrelle Rahean Dancy, 20, believed to be the son of Reginald Lamont Epps, who was killed, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance.

Tripp said evidence was collected to support the search warrant and Dancy was at the scene at the time of its service.

Dancy was jailed on $10,000 bond and has an April 17 court date.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Friday night identified Epps as the man killed in a shootout with officers earlier that day.

Four officers entered the residence at Straight Road, located in a mobile home court off Highway 48 outside Roanoke Rapids. They were there to serve a narcotics search warrant.

It was unclear whether Epps was asleep or already up when the deputies came around 8 a.m.

When the officers were inside Epps apparently fired at them with an unknown type weapon.

Detective H.L. Williams and narcotics Agent A.M. Harris returned fire using their .40-caliber semiautomatic weapons.

The SBI continues to conduct interviews and will make a final report to the district attorney’s office.

Williams and Harris are currently on leave with pay.
