Law enforcement remains at the scene this evening, continuing to investigate a shooting in which a suspect being served a narcotics search warrant was shot and killed after apparently firing on members of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

At this time, no new information was being released as the State Bureau of Investigation continues its probe into the matter. An agent from the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was also on the scene.

The shooting occurred around 8 a.m. when narcotics agents and deputies went to the residence on Straight Road, which is off Highway 48 outside Roanoke Rapids, to serve a search warrant, the sheriff’s office said earlier today.

Street sources say the suspect, whose name has yet to be released, was allegedly a high-level dealer in the local marijuana trade.

Narcotics agents and deputies were at the residence serving a search warrant when they were fired upon.

Two members of the sheriff’s office apparently returned fire, killing the suspect. The shootout occurred inside the mobile home.

Deputies blocked the entrance to Straight Road, allowing only residents and law enforcement to enter.

Media access was limited to a point at a trashcan more than 100 yards away from the crime scene, which was still barricaded by yellow tape.

As of this report, EMS had not arrived to claim the body.
