A Virginia Beach man died this morning on Country Club Road in Weldon after losing control of the van he was driving.

Lieutenant C.G. Davis of the Weldon Police Department said Charles Eugene Curley Jr., 58, was driving south on the road shortly before 10 a.m. when he lost control of his Sienna van near the Hampton Farm Road intersection.

He ran off the roadway to the right, lost control and ended up in the northbound travel lane where a Ford Explorer driven by Thomas Edmondson of Roanoke Rapids struck him.

Curley died at the scene. Davis said it not clear what caused Curley to go off the roadway. Speed was not a factor.

Edmondson, who was transferred to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, will not be charged.

Curley was visiting his parents who live in Gaston.
