The City of Roanoke Rapids announced today that the Roanoke Rapids Public Library recently received an award from the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association.
Head Librarian Jeff Watson accepted a certificate of recognition for Outstanding Teen Program for Small Library for the library’s Teen Book Club. The club, founded by Watson and Roanoke Rapids High School Media Coordinator Marci Merritt in August 2007, consists of ninth through 12th graders from the high school, though anyone in that age group may participate. The club meets at 8 a.m. on Tuesdays at the high school’s media center and at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at the Public Library when school is in session. Members, who have ranged from the classes of 2008 through 2016, discuss books they are reading with their peers.
“I am proud of this program, the impact it has had in our community, and the fact it has been acknowledged statewide in North Carolina,” Watson said.
