Missing his November 7 court date to answer charges lodged in an October 26 fatal crash, a New Jersey truck driver now has an order issued for his arrest.
Currently, William Castaneda faces charges of DWI in a commercial vehicle, reckless driving and felonious serious injury.
The order for arrest comes with a $20,000 cash bond, according to court records.
Castaneda has not been seen since his initial release on $4,500 bond after the Interstate 95 collision that claimed the life of 2-month-old Reginald Best of Halifax County.
The state Highway Patrol is working with New Jersey authorities to locate the 58-year-old truck driver from Elizabeth, New Jersey.
The child, according to a report sent to state Highway Patrol headquarters, was the most severely injured passenger in a third crash caused by an initial collision with a bear.
The child was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville in critical condition and died the Sunday following the crash.
The chain of events began shortly after 12:45 that morning in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 near the 160-mile marker in the Enfield area when a motorist struck a bear.
The initial collision caused a second collision and then a third involving five passenger vehicles when Castaneda allegedly failed to reduce speed in his tractor-trailer and plowed into the other vehicles.
Since then the family of the child is petitioning for a zero blood alcohol content threshold for drivers of commercials vehicle operating under the influence of alcohol.
The link to the petition gives an overview of the case and calls for a reduction of the blood alcohol content from the current .04 to .00 for commercial drivers.
The petition also gives some indication that Castaneda was allegedly driving with a blood alcohol content above the .04 threshold.
